Dear parents and caregivers at home,
Welcome to Term 2.  Hopefully you are all in the swing of things and the packed lunches are not too daunting.

As the days are getting cooler I have found that the children enjoy starting their week with Milo Mondays.  This is when those that wish have a nice hot Milo while we share our weekend news.  If your child is interested please provide them with a mug they can leave at school for the term.  Donations of Milo are happily accepted.  (No sugar) - Thank you.

This term starts with cross country training – please make sure your child has suitable running shoes and a bottle of water.  Training days – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Hopefully most children will manage over 5 laps of the field in ten minutes.  We will keep a record of the laps to see improvement.
All children are actively involved in the Summit club.  We have at times had a 100% strike rate of attendance for Summit.  This is amazing!!  Please continue to make sure children have adequate shoes on Thursday for this walk.

Our on-going school wide learning focus is ‘Educating Enterprise’.  Children have been developing knowledge of the social attributes of being enterprising and through this we will be completing our ‘Water Water Everywhere’ aqueducts by the end of week 2.  The main focus this week is to understand and label all the parts that make the structure of an aqueduct.

Written Language:
The arguments the children wrote about ‘The dog by law changes’ was outstanding.  We are in the process of publishing these to share on our blog over the following week.
This terms focus includes narratives followed by research for report writing.   Children will be looking at the structure and language of these genres, and craft their own to be published on our Blog.
I plan to start off narratives with the DVD ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, and explore the setting, plot and characters through this medium.  Hopefully we will have time to create some masks – so if anyone is good at paper Mache and chicken wire please let me know.

Reading:
Room 4 has a reading circle in action and I am hunting down Holes by Louis Sachar.  If anyone has copies of this book could you please send them to the class?  It would be much appreciated.

Math:
As a class I am still focusing on basic facts – addition with a heavy push on subtraction.
By week 4 we will move into geometry, followed by place value.
Please keep the basic facts moving, and also encourage children to read time using analogue clocks. All children know an easy to play card game that supports basic facts. There is also a very good book you can purchase that supports the math teaching in the class – Dragon Maths, author W Geldof, published by sigma. This supports my class teaching.

Other fun happenings for Room 4 include music with Bridget from week 2-7, visual art which will portray geometry in relief, two hockey training sessions and PE with Vai on Wednesdays.

Homework:
Due to the positive feedback on the homework programme at parent teacher interviews I will follow a similar format to last term.  Week One however is all ANZAC.
